Dear friends, family and angels:
(Spanish Translation Below)
Recently a sister, a close friend and a very dear woman, Maria Martinez, was diagnosed with a life threatening condition. A condition which if not treated properly and immediately could prove to be fatal.
Maria has developed what is called an Intradural-Extramedullary Tumor. This type of tumor develops in the nerve roots that extend out from the spinal cord. Nerve root tumors are generally benign but can become malignant over time if not removed. These tumors have a tendency to grow and attach themselves to the end or near the end of the spinal cord and are often quite large. The first step taken is to attempt to shrink the tumor. Then, whether the tumor has reduced in size or not, it still has to be removed. This is a very complicated procedure due to the extensive amount of nerves located in this area of the spine.
Maria's tumor is not cancerous; however, the mass has taken a toll on her motor functions causing an enormous amount of pain and the inability to conduct her day to day life. The tumor is located 3 to 4 inches from the top of the spine and is a mass the size of a grapefruit. If the procedure does not happen immediately, Maria could experience sever paralysis.
In this day and age it would seem as though there would be sufficient medical advances and technology to informatively remove this tumor. Maria should be able to seek the advice of a specialist, undergo surgery, have post surgery rehabilitation and continue to be treated with prescribed medicine. That’s right, if Maria lived in the United States, she would have all of these things available to her. But Maria doesn’t live in the US; Maria lives in Venezuela, South America where the needed medical attention is not readily available to her and the cost is astronomical.
See, the so called health care system in Venezuela is riddled with governmental interference. The healthcare system devised and run by President Chavez is ridden with corruption, mismanagement and disorganization. Chavez imports Cuban doctors to run clinics in the Barrios. Barrios are the equivalent to the slums in the US and make up approximately 80% of the living conditions in Venezuela. The Clinics located throughout the Barrios are free and treat the population for colds and minor incidents, but in no way are they capable of treating the affectation Maria has developed.
Maria's sister, Carmen, lives in the US and sends money home to her sister since Maria's condition has made it unable for her to work. Even if Maria could return to earning a living, the cost of the operation, rehabilitation, medical visits and medications are far beyond Maria's earning potential.
Carmen is happy to send money to her family but she is a single mother raising a teenager and working two jobs as it is. Any extra money is slim and is not enough to cover her sister's expenses.
This Family needs our help. Not only could they use our best wishes and prayers, but they need our financial assistance. Anything will help. A dollar or two from all of our friends, family and good souls will go a long way in helping Maria pay to have the surgery, the follow up care and the expenses she has incurred while being unable to work. Your contributions will help this fellow human being get on her way to a complete recovery and a fully functioning and productive life.
We thank you for any help you can give.
